In the future, India seems to be unprepared for the extreme heatwave issue and India unprepared for growing heat.

This study claims that even though recent or immediate actions are being taken care of, long-term strategies need to be implemented and remain scarce.

India’s heat action plan seems to be staying only on paper, and the vulnerability factor and risk are increasing with each passing year, Delhi being a strong victim of the Heatwave even this year.

Many heat action plan often ask to use regular water to prevent heat strokes and also water scarcity due to higher temperatures is a serious concern.

The Heatwave Report & Is India Unprepared For Growing Heat?

This report was prepared by the Sustainable Futures Collaborative (SFC) based in New Delhi a non-profit. It’s being warned that India in the future may see people passing away because of heat problems, and prolonged and extreme heatwave that need immediate attention.

We need to protect our environment and deal with Climate Change as soon as possible.

Many long-term measures need to be implemented now, with an urgency to prevent increasing economic damages and mortality rates because of heatwaves and we need to work on our unsustainable development goals.

Short-term actions even though are life-saving practices still long-term solutions will be capable of managing the damage to the economy, preventing human health hazards, and capacity-building health systems.

If a station reaches 40 degrees Celsius then it’s called heatwave and they typically occur between March and June.

They cause extremely high temperatures to at times become unbearable and occur mainly in the northwestern region of India and with every passing year gets more catastrophic and this affects people living in this region.

Heatwaves are also known as Silent Disaster.

The annual temperatures around the globe are increasing with each passing year and it’s a concern that many cities are facing, especially in the tropical region hence there is a need for policy and tackling challenges by focusing on disaster risk management.

Also, according to a report, that’s prepared by the National Programme On Climate Change and Human Health, the heat problem affected thousands of people and affected public health and this caused a lot of problems.

The report itself is a concern for the future scenario and thus it’s the responsibility of everyone around the world to take necessary actions to keep the environment safe, clean, and healthy for future generations.

This problem needs serious tacking for which the National disaster management authority and IMD created some heat action plans for 23 states and union territories and which is why we need to stay fit, healthy and focus on our sustainable goals and focus on solutions.

India has various climate goals and they are working hard to achieve them like achieving net-zero by 2070 and tackling heat issue is possible for India.

The 9 Metro Cities Facing Heat Issue Since Many Years Now

The survey was done for 9 major metro cities to identify major short-term and long-term measures and the cities are:

• Bengaluru
• Meerut
• Mumbai
• Delhi
• Faridabad
• Gwalior
• Kota
• Ludhiana
• Surat

Combining all they comprise of 11% of India’s total population according to census 2011.

These cities over the past few years have witnessed major heat issues and this problem is rising with each passing year.

There is an urgency to:

• Measure and access vulnerability and identify urban heat islands
• building capacity of health staff
• implementors of the healing action plan

There is a need to invest in technology that’s energy-efficient cooling devices.

One of the top barriers includes the lack of coordination among institutions followed by prioritizing competing on heat limiting focus.

14% of people surveyed said they do not have any heating problems though.

Various different climate models were used to monitor the 9 cities as there’s a rise of heat level index recently and hence that’s comprising a population of more than 1 million.

For the analysis part, various interviews were conducted with state government officials, cities, and districts who were responsible for implementing heat actions in these cities.

The Heat Problem Concern & Solutions

It’s a serious concern and must be taken care of under any given circumstances such problems arise when there is a mismanagement of resources and anthropogenic activities take a rise.

The environment is at risk and it’s our responsibility to take care of our Nature which must be done in a precise way.

The heat problem is a big concern and hence there must be some solutions that can be implemented and they are:

• We need to focus on short-term and long-term practices
• There is an urgent need to implement heat action plans
• Promoting cooling roofs
• Increasing a lot of green spaces
• Switching to EV vehicles
• Promoting afforestation practices
• Ensuring proper access to water, and healthcare facilities.

All these solutions need a lot of hard work not only in India but around the world since we are dealing with so many issues hence it’s our responsibility that this summer we must focus on individual sustainable lifestyle practices that can at least temporarily save us from heatstrokes.

Heat as a problem is rising every year and decade and to achieve the Paris Agreement goals, it’s our responsibility to come ahead with the government to become good citizens and save the environment around us at any given cost.

Indian Meteorological Department Shares Data

IMD (Indian Meteorological Department) always issues warnings, and forecasts related to multiple weather events, especially for heatwaves in different spatial and temporal scales, and shares the same data with disaster management, and also with the public to take proper mitigation measures.

IMD’s Criteria For Heatwaves

• When the normal temperature of a particular station reaches more than 40 degrees Celsius.
• When the normal temperature scenario gets maximized and the temperature reaches 45 degrees Celsius at least, it’s an issue of a heatwave, and be alert to stay at your home and stay hydrated at times.
• For plains, it’s 40 degrees and for the hilly region, it’s 30 degrees at least, and 37 degrees in coastal areas.

Even though the heatwave issue is rising in the tropical regions, especially in the Indian subcontinent but is India unprepared for growing heat? Well, India is likely to stay prepared for the future, and their climate action goals will make sure the heatwave issue is resolved.
